ZenRecap was built at Zenkoders as a product for teams who communicate asynchronously — starting with our own team. We were using existing screen recorders and running into the same friction everyone does: the upload step, the link-sharing step, the ‘I watched it but forgot the action items’ problem. We wanted something faster and smarter.
The Chrome extension audio capture was the most technically demanding part. Browser audio capture behaves differently depending on the OS, whether you are capturing a specific tab or the full screen, how system audio is routed on Mac versus Windows, and what happens when the user has multiple audio devices connected. We had to handle every edge case reliably and silently — the user should never notice that anything could go wrong.
The core differences are AI output quality and zero-friction entry. ZenRecap generates a transcript, a Claude-powered summary, and chapter markers automatically — Loom’s AI features are gated behind paid plans. ZenRecap also requires no account to record or share, which removes the biggest barrier to a teammate’s first recording. The draw tool and cursor spotlight are also built in without any additional setup.

ZenRecap is a Chrome extension, so it runs on any OS where Chrome runs — Windows, Mac, and Linux. There is no separate desktop app to install. The screen capture, camera overlay, and audio mixing all work through the browser’s native APIs.
